START: Balmorhea, TX TODAY: 339 Miles
END: Silver City, NM TOTAL: 2,034 Miles
CAMPGROUND: Manzano's RV Park
We
started the day with a very pleasant 63 degrees after a very hard rain in the
middle of the night. Exiting the park we
took this little two-lane country road to reach I-10, but the speed limit was
75 – boy they drive fast in Texas! The small-town America scenes along the roadways have made the long drives more interesting.
This could be the smallest church we have ever seen.
Our morning drive to El Paso was delightful. There was zero traffic, good road and rolling hills. I caught a quick glimpse of a roadrunner, the cartoon version is a lot cuter!

As we approached the sign for Fort Davis, we discussed whether we should stop and decided against it. We had research the fort which was a frontier military post during the Indian Wars from 1854 to 1891. This area was on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road on the Chihuahua Trail.
I’m sure we would have enjoyed a visit, but . . .
At
9:30 the clock instantly flipped to 8:30 just as we spotted the sign
designation Mountain Time Zone. An hour
down the road, we could see the Rio Grande on the navigation screen, but the
only visible evidence was a line of green grown just this side of the mountain
range. Thirty minutes later a section of
the rust-colored border wall was visible.
A little later all traffic was diverted through a border inspection
station, which was uneventful.

The rest areas through Texas and New Mexico have been well appointed, clean and welcoming.
Just after lunch we crossed the Rio Grande with farm crops on one side and pecan groves on the other.
Mid-day
temperatures were 94-97 degrees until we turned northwest and began to climb in
altitude. The roadside artwork had a local flare.
By 2:00 another travel day was behind us and our little home was secured for the night. We met two people in the process of setting up, one had been here for a month and the other has spent the past six months here. We will be moving on tomorrow.
